Imagine waking up every day in an Italian city, with the flexibility to work from wherever you please. It’s a new era for those seeking freedom and work-life adventures!
To whom is it addressed and what are the Requirements?
A digital nomad is defined as a non-EU citizen who engages in highly skilled remote work in Italy, whether as a freelancer or as an employee/collaborator of a company, which may also be based abroad.
The digital nomad visa is exempt from quota limits, and it is not necessary to apply for a nulla osta for entry as a digital nomad (whether a professional or freelancer), nor as a remote worker (employee or collaborator of a company).

Your Next Step: Codice Fiscale and Permesso di Soggiorno
If you’re applying for the digital nomad visa from abroad and haven’t yet established residency in Italy, you may not have an Italian tax code at the time of visa application. However, it’s important to begin exploring the process of obtaining an Italian tax code as soon as you plan to move to Italy. Having a codice fiscale is essential for various aspects of life in Italy, including:
-
Legal Obligations:
such as signing a rental agreement, buying property, or registering for utilities.
-
Healthcare Access:
whether through private health insurance or the Italian National Health Service (SSN).
-
Financial Transactions:
such as opening a bank account or conducting business activities.
If you’re a freelancer in need of your VAT number (company tax code), you can obtain it at the local tax office once you’re in Italy or delegate this process to a third party. We provide comprehensive support to handle the necessary tax procedures for starting a business in Italy, including assistance in delegating the VAT registration request.
After securing your digital nomad visa and setting your sights on Italy, the next crucial step is to apply for your residence permit within eight days of arriving in the country. This permit is essential for your stay, granting you the legal right to live and work in Italy.
Upon renewing the permit for five years and meeting all applicable requirements, such as filing your Italian tax return, you’ll become eligible to apply for a long-term residence permit. This will provide even greater stability and security throughout your tenure in Italy as a digital nomad.
