To whom is it addressed and what are the Requirements?

A digital nomad is defined as a non-EU citizen who engages in highly skilled remote work in Italy, whether as a freelancer or as an employee/collaborator of a company, which may also be based abroad.

The digital nomad visa is exempt from quota limits, and it is not necessary to apply for a nulla osta for entry as a digital nomad (whether a professional or freelancer), nor as a remote worker (employee or collaborator of a company).

If you’re interested in coming to Italy as a digital nomad, you need to meet these Requirements: 

  • Minimum Income:

You must demonstrate an annual income at least triple the minimum required for health insurance exemption (28.000€ circa)

  • Health insurance:

You need insurance that covers medical treatment and hospital stays nationwide

  • Arrange accommodation in Italy:
Prepare documentation regarding your accommodation 
  • Work Experience:

Have worked as a digital nomad or remote worker for at least 6 months prior

  • Employment contract:

Make sure you have a valid employment or collaboration contract ready to present

  • Higher Education:

You must demonstrate possession of a university degree (minimum 3 years) from an accredited institution,  an accredited professional license, or accredited higher professional experience.

 Moreover, there could also be need:

  • Sworn statement on previous criminal convictions:

Though the regulation doesn’t mention checking your criminal record, some consulates may still request it, even if it’s not listed as a requirement

The Path to Your Digital Nomad Visa: Step-by-Step

The Steps:

Step 1

Find the Competent Consulate

You must submit your application at the Italian Consulate responsible for your residence.

Step 2

Obtain the Application Form

Before going to the Consulate, obtain the visa application form. You can find it on the Consulate’s website or request it directly from the consulate office.

Step 3

Schedule an Appointment

Schedule an appointment with the Italian Consulate. Availability may be limited, so plan ahead.

Step 4

Fill out the Application Form

Carefully complete the form, ensuring you enter your full name as it appears on your passport.

Step 5

Prepare Additional Documents

Make sure you have all the necessary documents, such as the signed declaration from your employer and an official certification of no previous criminal convictions (police record certificate).

Step 6

Ensure Passport Validity

Check that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond the end of the requested visa period and has at least one completely blank page for visa issuance.

Step 7

Pay the Fee

Make sure you have the fee of 116 EUR per person ready for payment.

Some consulates accept cash and local currency, while others require a postal order made out to the Italian Consulate. Check the amount and payment method on the Consulate’s website before submitting your application

Step 8

Submit the Application

Go to the Italian Consulate at the scheduled time to submit your application and complete the process.

With all documents in order, it takes approximately 1 month to obtain a Digital Nomad Visa, depending on the Italian consulate where the application is submitted. However, throughout the process, remember to leave your passport with the consulate until the visa is issued.
