All foreigners that comes to Spain to buy or rent properties, to open a bank account, to stay longer and obtain permit of stay, or for some other social needs may have to request a NIE.

NIE may be requested in the following cases:

• In case of request of obtaining a residence permit or a student visa in Spain for more than 180 days. In this case, the NIE number is assigned automatically upon a residence permit or student residency in Spain is approved.
• For some economical, professional or social reasons, a foreigner needs this number.

Issued NIE number will belong to the person forever, but the certificate with NIE number is valid only 90 days.
