Curious About the "EU long-term permit"?

Learn What It Is and How It Can Benefit You!

The Legislative Decree No. 3 of January 8, 2007 implemented Directive 2003/109/EC to replace the old “Carta di Soggiorno” with the “Permesso di Soggiorno UE per Soggiornanti di Lungo Periodo” ( translated EU long-term residence permit).

This permit, known also as “ex Carta di Soggiorno“, is a vital document for non EU members planning to reside in Italy for an extended period.

The document provides numerous benefits for those looking to reside in Italy long-term. It offers legal residency, stability, and freedom of movement within the Schengen Area. Holders can access essential services, employment opportunities, and even pursue family reunification. Overall, it provides the opportunity to establish roots in Italy and enjoy the perks of legal residency!

Permesso di Soggiorno vs ex Carta di Soggiorno :
Are They the Same Thing?

The Permesso di Soggiorno and the ex Carta di Soggiorno serve similar purposes but with notable differences.

While the Permesso di Soggiorno is typically issued to foreigners seeking temporary residence in Italy for a specific purpose (such as study, work, or family reunification), the ex Carta di Soggiorno, similar to the US “green card,” is geared towards those seeking permanent residency.
The Permesso di Soggiorno is temporary and needs to be renewed periodically, whereas the ex Carta di Soggiorno grants permanent residency rights. However, it’s worth noting that even though the ex Carta di Soggiorno is considered indefinite, it must be renewed every 10 years (5 years for minors) if used as an identification document.

As of January 2021, in compliance with the new electronic residence permit model, the expiry date on the document will no longer indicate an unlimited duration of residency rights acquired by the holder, but rather the 10-year validity of the physical document itself.

Obtaining the Carta di Soggiorno often involves navigating multiple rounds of the Permesso di Soggiorno before eligibility for the Carta di Soggiorno is established. However, don’t fret! We’re here to simplify the process and make your residency in Italy a stress-free and hassle-free reality. Keep reading to discover how we can assist you every step of the way.
